I can confirm this bug also happens on a fresh install of Kubuntu 13.04
using a custom COMPAL notebook with Intel  i915GM graphics driver.

To me the workaround is just press Fn+F5 (brightness up) when the screen
goes blank, then the login screen appears normally.

Also if I boot into recovery mode and choose "Resume" on the recovery
options the screen is visible right away without having to press Fn+F5.

All workarounds already presented on this bug report also work, so it is
definitely the same bug.
