I am also getting this. I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.10 64bit to 13.4. System asks me for my password at boot ( it normal), then when I log in it goes to a black screen with a flashing white underscore. I can type here but no commands are executed (from what I can tell...). If I press alt and f2 I get a prompt that I can log into and execute commands. After the upgrade everything worked fine for probably about 5 restarts.
