OK, I think I've got a cause, but not a solution as yet. I've just installed 13.04 onto a new partition, with a new, seperate /home - I'll call it Temp-home(TH) to save typing On previous installs of Ubuntu, I use an existing seperate /home, I'll call it PH to save typing. When 13.04 starts using TH, Unity works and I get a status bar. When I add PH to /etc/fstab, Unity does'nt work and status bar is missing. Take PH out of /etc/fstab and Unity/status bar are fine. Not enough room to merege PH into TH. Looks like there's something within PH that's conflicting and stopping Unity/ status bar from appearing.
