I've had no problem with plugging external monitor to my notebook until
12.04 came out. It was easy and quickly, but in current Ubuntu i can't
make extended desktop (i.e. my notebook 1280-800 with 32' tv). It works
only on one of them. With smaller external monitors it also doesn't
work.
