Just fixed for me, but it seems that last update in Lightdm and / or upstart broke things again. Symptoms are not quite the same, but the issues might be related...

[ 4.748] Fatal server error: [ 4.748] no screens found I opened bug #1159099 against lightdm (but maybe its a duplicate after all). I also found references to the same type of problems in #799069.
