I have found a workaround that works at least for me. I appended "vga=792 nomodeset" to the kernel arguments, and I provided an /etc/X11/xorg.conf specific to my setup. Incidentally, my graphics card is a GeForce4 and not a GeForce3 as stated earlier. For the instance where I was seeing a blank screen with just a cursor, it was sufficient to append "nomodeset" without the vga argument, resulting in a low- resolution console and tty 1-6 screens. For the instance where I was seeing black and white stripes and blocks, it was necessary to provide both vga and nomodeset arguments.
