Updated my kernel today: 3.2.0-36-generic-pae #56-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 2 22:09:45 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
and it was very nice not to have to run NVIDIA- Linux-x86-96.43.23-pkg1.run on reboot. Simply installed the kernel update, rebooted and 96.43.23-0ubuntu0.1 activated & worked w/o issues.
