I have decided to workaround the problem. I installed my old ATI Radeon card from my old (dead) PC. Then I installed the Zorin 6.1 distribution. I now have the correct screen resolution and full control of the screen i.e. in "Displays" you can see the make & manufacturer of the screen and is switches off when Zorin shuts down.
I am convinced that a major part of my problem was that my nVidia card does not have a VGA interface and my screen only accepted a VGA interface therefore I had to by a DVI to VGA converter plug. It may be that this blocks the ability to control the screen ( Only a guess). Zorin 6.1 is based on 12.04 which also seems to resolve the driver issues. I will stick with Zorin from now on. I hope you get to the bottom of the issues in 12.10.
