I believe I have developed a workaround PLEASE READ ENTIRELY BEFORE EXECUTING
Open a terminal and do the following: sudo apt-get install xserver-common=2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10 xserver-xorg- core=2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10 % this operation downgrades xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core. For me, the installed versions before downgrading were both 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.8 % The following packages were recommended when i tried downgrading xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core, so I installed them sudo apt-get install xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi % after this completes, reboot, then login and open a terminal and do: sudo nvidia-xconfig % then reboot one more time DONE __________________________________________________________________ This got my configuration working.
