With xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.20.9-0ubuntu2 on xubuntu 12.10 x86_64 and kernel 3.5.0-18-generic external monitor mirrors part of the mail monitor (which has better resolution) - it's impossible to use it as external monitor and have separate desktop on it.
