I have an hp dm4, with radeon hd 7470, and intel 3000, I get the same symptoms, overheating, fan always on, and am unable to install amd drivers, I get the same low graphics 'mode/ no unity problem'. My suggestion is to double check that your card is actually supported by gh the 12,11 beta driver also doesnt support me. I stopped my laptop overheating using the same method as 'theshabang' suggests.
