I figured out an easy way to resolve this when it happens. I had my laptop's touchpad disabled in the BIOS (since I would often accidentally hit the touchpad while typing). I re-enabled the touchpad in the BIOS, and now when things get into the state described above (left mouse button appears permanently depressed) I can cure things by pressing the left button on the touchpad.
