I installed the nvidia proprietary drivers and after three days no freezing occurred in Kubuntu. I uninstalled the proprietary drivers and freezes are back. Clearly, my problem is related to the "nouveau" drivers. In a few posts above I put what I get after freezing in kern.log file.
