Updated to nvidia dev drivers, 304.37 problem of graphics locking up presisted. Message about video card falling off the bus in dmesg did go away. Changed to unity-2d, problems of graphics locking up presisted. Turned off OpenGL in desktop effects problem went away. Note: playing OpenGL games still result in graphics locking up,
