I have the same problem with a GeForce 420 on 12.04 (precise):

Performance is really poor (windows lag behind) and the whole desktop is not
very usable. Nouveau is installed in version:

ii xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
1:0.0.16+git20111201+b5534a1-1build2 X.Org X server -- Nouveau display
