I have a Sandy Bridge (Core i7-720QM) with only a Geforce (GTS 250M), and I have permanent freezes too. I haven't tried 3.3.6 kernel because I don't have Ubuntu 12.04 installed anymore. I tried to reinstall it, but each time it freezes before the end of installation...
