In the last couple of days, I noticed that when I tried to boot my
machine would hang indefinitely. The splash screen with the Ubuntu logo
and the blinking dots was up, and the dots continued to blink.
I tried to use ctrl-alt-F1 and after a bit of typing found myself at the
login screen, the hang over. However, when I tried to select a session
the system hanged again.
Going into grub at the start, I tried going back to the 2.3.0-23 kernel.
This worked perfectly, and I had no trouble at all with that kernel.
Collecting more info to help you guys, I edited the 2.3.0-24 boot
options to remove 'splash' and 'quiet'
This is what I found when the system hanged:

Pressing enter fixed the problem, and pressing anything besides enter
first got me to the login screen but caused a hang there.
Yesterday, before I noticed the problem but before I tried rebooting, I
had installed the 'hibernate' package. Removing the package didn't help
with the problem, though.
