After upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 mouse pointer disappeared. This might be a driver issue as well as related to graphics card because install both from usb stick and cd froze completely with my gtx 580. I changed that to gts 250 and install from cd went through. However during the installation process several errors were reported; 'unable to install previous packages which were broken' as I remember it was stated.
