I have also Geforce FX 5500. Unfortunately it has only 256 MB, so it cannot run Unity 3D. If you have an FX 5500 you can run 12.04 LTS only in the Unity 2D mode. FX 5500 is to old, so the only thing you can do is to buy newer video card with a minimum of 512 MB. Also you can try a lighter version of Ubuntu, for instance Xubuntu 12.04 LTS.
