I don't know if this is related, but I get the following:
$ xrandr --output LVDS --auto --output VGA --auto --right-of LVDS
xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 2048x2048 (desired size 2880x1200)
even though I have the following in my xorg.conf:
Section "Screen"
...
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 2880 1600
EndSubSection
EndSection
--
[i915] 'xrandr' with no arguments garbles screen
