The problem didn't occur with the most current update.
I ran aptitude safe-upgrade and nvidia-current was marked as
upgradeable.
nvidia-current 295.33-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 => 295.40-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1
nvidia-settings 295.33-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 => 295.40-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1
nvidia-settings was upgraded transitively.
I'd like to leave this bug open until I successfully upgraded to 12.04.
