Ah - thanks for the tip! It seems this came from the xorg-edgers PPA which I 
installed based on suggestions at 
http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/202-ubuntu-acer-ao722 on installing this 
machine - which seem to now be outdated.

Once I did a ppa-purge I can confirm that fglrx works correctly on this
laptop, and hardware acceleration appears fully functional.
