Are you able to set the preferred rate via xrandr? I.e.
xrandr -r 60.0 -s 1680x1050
If so, you could stick that in your .xsessionrc file.
Alternatively, try this in your xorg.conf:

Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "TwinView" "0"

Further, make sure you do not have a ~/.config/monitors.xml file (it
won't work with nvidia).
