There were several HDMI fixes in the 2.6.37 kernel for EDID detection, EDID parsing, and underscan calculation. If the problems still occur with Ubuntu 11.04 (which uses a 2.6.38-based kernel) or later, there is a patch in the just-released 3.3 kernel to add EDID support for CEA video modes. Several people have reported gaining additional, much wanted modes. A PPA of this kernel is available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
