Relevant section of the multi-monitor specification: "When the laptop lid is closed, the internal panel is disabled, automatically setting the external monitor as the Primary display and moving all windows from the internal panel across. A power-on signal is also sent to the external display (through the H-sync and V-sync pins: as specified in the VESA DPMS spec), to ensure that it is awake."
