I have a same issue. - unity3d on ubuntu 11.10 - run mplayer with vdpau mode and video HD - unity locks up and hard reboot is necessary
The problem is : incompatibility between composite mode and vdpau API. Temporary patch is : I disable nvidia composite mode (sudo nvidia-xconfig --no-composite) my video running with vdpau but unity lost 3d effects.
