Just to add: I have the same problem, with the same crippling effects:
my displays will randomly go into powersave (turn completely black) and
cannot be awakened through the mouse or keyboard input. The only
solution is a hard reboot.

I have a System 76 Mad Dog:
1 GB nVidia GeForce GT430
4 GB - 2 x 2 GB - DDR3 - 1333 MHz
2nd Generation Intel Core i5-2400

Because of my graphics card, one of my monitors is connected through
DVI; the other is connected by HDMI.

I can also echo Palewire that this has had a seemingly positive cause
while playing music (Banshee or Clementine) although at other times it
seems just random.

Bryce: I can say that I have never been switching workspaces when this
occured. However, I do seem to be affected by another bug when using
Unity that clicking the Workspace Switcher makes my screens temporarily
go black.
