I had the same problem running Xubuntu 9.04.1 with kernel 2.6.28-14, and
was ready to try PCBSD, when I gave compiling my own kernel a try. My
MacBook is from March 2007 (core2due cpu), and compiling kernel 2.6.30-4
did the trick for me. (Note: I compiled the new kernel with stock
options [i.e. I didn't change anything].)
