I can reproduce this relatively easily. I simply open eog and view a
series of JPG images. It usually only takes 4 or 5 before X crashes and
I have to log in again. Occasionally the machine will hang and I will
have to power-cycle it to recover. I did notice that in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log the last line is:
[ 132.102] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite
loop.
