I'm experiencing this on Arch Linux (so yeah, everything's up-to-date - xorg-server 1.11.2, VLC 1.1.12). It only started happening in the last few weeks, though, but I didn't notice it soon enough for any updates to stand out in the logs. Error message is the same (searching it got me here).
