AFAIK problem is because Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 doesn't use intel X driver on Intel i845 (82845G) and i855 devices, but uses fbdev instead. Could you force driver to intel by copying attached xorg.conf to /etc/X11/ folder and test if monitors are correctly detected? I did this on my system with Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01) and now my computer detects monitors and works fine with Ubuntu 11.04, see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/721883/comments/3
