Same here on a Dell Inspiron 710m with driver i915 and Linux kernel 2.6.32-33-generic. Sometimes, and for a reason that I haven't identified yet, if I open Thunderbird or Firefox I get a black screen then go back to the log in screen; I have to reboot to get rid of that malfunctioning. It happens at least once a week and started within the last 7 days (I would say).
