Regarding the last pieces of getting this bug fixed in Karmic, I don't have a working amd64 system right now, but I've prepared https://launchpad.net/~cjwatson/+archive/ia32-libs-testing which should include the libxcb fix for this bug. I'd really appreciate it if any Karmic amd64 users could install ia32-libs from that test archive and confirm whether it fixes this bug.
