This is an X11 (or lightdm, or whatever) issue, not a video driver issue. I have the exact same symptoms but I have a nVidia chipset on my laptop. I also did a complete wipe and re-install and had the identical problem when using the daily build iso for 2011-08-12. I went back to my daily build CD from 2011-07-19 and the install worked fine (i.e. not a hardware issue). Then I ran updates and after the reboot I no longer get my GUI -- same as above. When I run startx from the shell, it starts okay, but some icons are missing (whatever the bottom two on the left, above the Workspaces icon).
