You can permanently solve the start up problem by using modeset=0 option or it's variants on you grub configuration. Make sure you also do the same for recovery.
Now I have the same problem when waking from "sleep". vertical lines and usually, if am lucky, I can simply close the lid an flip it open to force another "sleep" "wake" cycle and the screen clears. Unfortunately the lines also appears when the screen switches from full screen applications/screen savers and such. It makes the laptop mostly unusable sometimes.
