I think I am having this same issue. Reported it here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- intel/+bug/779163 Its totally random but occurs when I either on a video call with skype or watching video with vlc. I don't know if it helps but the first time I got this issue was when I used kernel 2.6.38 on ubuntu 10.10 (which shipped with the kernel 2.6.35) so it might be a kernel issue? also a friend who runs gentoo confirmed to me he is running same issues and he too is on 2.6.38.
