Nouveau hangs the system way more often then the nvidia driver for me as well.
With the nvidia-driver I a hung X, but I can still ssh into the box, so clean shutdown is possible. I also noticed that when using mplayer to watch some 720p mkv-files ( non-vdpau ) X hangs just when movie is done and window about to disappear.
