Rats. I loaded synaptic and chose to remove nvidia 270 and install 173 and had all kinds of problems.
When I rebooted, the loging screen was only one thin line of display at the top of the monitor and all the rest was black. I could reboot with default display from the recovery mode, and used the additional driver tool to go back to nvidia-current and the blank windows are back.
