@Raphael Is your system running fine now? And could you perhaps post the contents of your xorg.conf ?
I've got the same video card, running Kubuntu jaunty with latest updates and experience these freezes all the time. Even when idle, the Xorg uses 20-50% of cpu time. And all of this without running compositing. I can also confirm that this didn't happen with Intrepid.
