After filing my last comment above, I moved to Debian Lenny on that machine, and so I no longer have easy access to Ubuntu. My newer machine (also Debian) doesn't even have nvidia hardware.
Thus it's no longer a problem for me, but I have no idea if "Fix Released" is accurate, either.
