Mark, one of the ways to check whether you have dri/kms enabled is 1) by using command "glxinfo | grep render" 2) or switch to one of the to virtual terminal vt[1-6] (using Ctrl+Alt+F[0-6]), i.e., if it is then you'll see a fine font and can even watch video without X there!
