We shipped 8.780 in maverick, so I gather the 8.831 version you had
installed on maverick was self-installed either from the AMD website or
some PPA; in either case it's not an officially supported upgrade path,
so YMMV on upgrades.  Perhaps dkms could be strengthened for handling
this type of case but I'm unsure what changes would do it.
