Hardware: Samsung X20 Laptop

The text in the tty consoles is small an crisp, as if the full 1400x1050
resolution (or something similar) were correctly set, but only the top and left
three quarters of the physical screen height and width are actually used, the
rest remains black.
(Measuring with a ruler, it actually seems like about 73% of the physical width
and height.)

No text is lost or invisible, it's just as if the system took the top-left
rectangle of 1024x768 physical pixels of the actual 1400x1050 screen and then
pretended that this 1024x768 area was in fact the whole screen on which to draw
the tty console contents.
(I can not tell for certain it's a 1024x768 rectangle but that would correspond
to the about 73% I measured.)

The tty consoles have 48 lines of 128 columns.

Note: The X server correctly uses the whole screen at the full 1400x1050
resolution, no problem there.
