Note that this solution worked for a ThinkPad410 with Intel graphics
(i915 driver), as follows:

the options in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX parameter, so that it reads:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=1"
then run
update-grub
