Hello everyone, Just to report that I bumped into this same bug upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 with a VAIO VGN-FW31ZJ.
After purging the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package I was able to start the upgrade (downloading new packages right now). Will see how the machine behaves when its finished.
