Font smear very much still with us on karmic 2.6.31-1 as updated on 20090704.
Either Ubuntu never picked up the fix from upstream on bugzilla 21415 or else the fix doesn't work or whatever. For useful work on this IBM Thinkpad R31 it's still Intrepid which doesn't smear.
