Are you using a LiveCD? I don't have this problem on my X61 Tablet with karmic installed, but I had this problem when running from a LiveCD (but these days I run from a LiveUSB image, so I don't notice it anymore). I reported this as bug 311362. A workaround was to kill gnome-screensaver from the VT. This made subsequent suspend-resume cycles work as well.
