Binary package hint: gnome
(Update - 1/23/09 by Jim (JR))
Completely re-writing description based on new information
Issue:
If visual effects are turned on - mousing-over the title bar controls (upper
right hand corner), causes title bar to reverse color, the controls are either
poorly drawn or visually missing, and even the title-bar outlines can disappear.
Note to Developers:
1. I strongly suspect that this has to do with the Nvidea proprietary driver I
installed on this laptop - as turning visual effects (eye candy) entirely off
eliminates the problem.
2. My suspicion gains confirmation because other machine installs I have done
did not exhibit this behavior - but no proprietary drivers were installed.
(Though it is only fair to say that these installs also defaulted to visual
effects - off.)
Machine:
HP (Comapq) Presario F500 laptop with integrated wifi (broadcom), video
(nvidia), and NIC (don't remember)
Processor is an AMD64 (Athlon X2 - 2+ gHz.)
2 Gig RAM
Huge HD partitioned into five parts with four OS's and a small swap space. (two
windows, two Ubuntu)
Proprietary Broadcom and Nvidia drivers installed. (latest)
Steps to reproduce:
Install and launch either 32 or 64 bit versions of Ubuntu on a machine with an
NVIDIA graphics adapter, using the proprietary Nvidia driver.
Verify that visual effects are turned off.
Open "System --> Preferences --> Appearance"
Select the "visual effects" tab.
Verify visual effects are set to "off"
Mouse over the window controls in the upper right corner at the end of the
title bar, and move the mouse around over these controls.
Then, change the visual effects from "off" to "normal".
Repeat the mouse-over as described before.
Expected Results:
Mousing over the controls should have no effect except that the control buttons
might change color slightly to indicate the "presence" of the mouse's sphere of
influence.
Actual Results:
When doing this with visual effects turned off, the results are as expected.
When doing this with visual effects turned ON - the title bar periodically
"reverses" itself and partially vanishes when you mouse over the controls in
the upper right hand corner.
Additional note:
Due to other instances of the window title-bar flipping behavior - I suspect
that this would occur if the mouse were to glide over ANY "active" (sensitive
to the mouse's presence) control or link or whatever within the window - as I
have seen this behavior happen without massaging the window close controls.
p.s. Sorry for the "re-do" but I discovered this simple and direct way
to provoke this action and decided to re-write the bug to conform.
Sorry for any confusion caused thereto.
