FWIW my ThinkPad R61i had a drastic improvement after upgrading the kernel to the 2.6.29 line following the 'optimal' config per this HOWTO: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582
Unfortunately, the text will garble up after suspending/hibernating or switching users. Restarting X solves the issue.
