I'm getting this all the time. It happened in Kubuntu 8.10, and still happens in 9.04. I'm using an NVidia video card with proprietary drivers version 180.
Usually, X freezes while I'm debugging another application. Perhaps that application gets stopped in the middle of a request to the X server.
